The Reverend Shim Bo (Sunim) 심보스님
Reverend Shim Bo is a Buddhist Monk/Zen priest and the Abbot and Spiritual Director of White Lotus Haven Zen of Connecticut, Inc. (WLHZ). As Abbot and Spiritual Director, Shim Bo Sunim offers Zen Buddhist teachings that include: meditation instruction, chanting, sutra study, spiritual guidance and support, and zen liturgy for individuals and groups. Reverend Shim Bo, in coordination with the WLHZ Board of Directors, directs the development and cultivation of ongoing WLHZ programming, and is the Sangha representative to Buddhist associations and the community at large.
The Reverend, having over 15 years of experience training in traditional KoreanZen practice forms, made his solemn profession as a full Bhikkhu (비구) in The United Buddhist Church (UBC) presided by The Most Venerable Dr. Sunyananda Dharma. The UBC is a contemporary Buddhist Order that reflects a union of its parent traditions, namely the Korean, Vietnamese, and Japanese Zen traditions of His Holiness Dr. Kyung Bo Seo (Il Bung), His Holiness Dr. Thích Thiên Ân, Zen Master Seung Sahn, and Taizan Maezumi Roshi. UBC is noted for its openness, making the Buddhist tradition truly available without discrimination or distinction — as transmitted by its lineage masters. Reverend Shim Bo is a fully professed and sanctioned teacher in both the Korean Il Bung Zen Order 일붕선정, and the Vietnamese Lâm Tế Thiền Order (dharma name, Thích Tâm Bồ).
In addition, he serves as a dharma mentor/teacher with the Buddhist Association of the United States (BAUS) Prisoner Correspondence Course, whose mission is to familiarize, guide and support learners with Buddhist teachings, theory and practice, helping them integrate Buddhism into everyday life. He also volunteers with Buddhist Global Relief a non-profit organization combating chronic hunger and malnutrition by providing direct food-aid to those in need, helping develop better long-term methods of sustainable food production and management, promoting the education of girls and women, and providing them opportunities to start “right livelihood” projects to support their families.
“Honoring and continuing in the pedagogy of Seon-Kyo (zen meditation/contemplation + sutra study), advanced by His Holiness Dr. Kyung Bo Seo (Il Bung), White Lotus Haven Zen offers students both a well-grounded introduction to Buddhist teachings, and clear training and guidance in the disciplines of zen meditation and practice forms.” — Reverend Shim Bo (Sunim)
