SUMMARY:Cheondo Jae (Ullambana 우란분재)  Memorial Service
DESCRIPTION:Uranbunjae (Kor. 우란분재\, Chin. 盂蘭盆齋\, lit. Ullambana purification) is a Buddhist ceremony in which food offerings are made in an effort to console and liberate the deceased from any suffering\, especially those of one’s ancestors. The ceremony originates from the story of the disciple Mahāmaudgalyāyana who strives unsuccessfully to liberate his deceased mother from a lower realm of existance. The Buddha teaches\, liberation is only be possible through the collective intention of the sangha at large. In this yearly ceremony we commemorate the Ullambana Sutra by making offerings and generating goodwill and liberative intentions for all. \nIn Korea the ceremony is held on the Buddhist All Soul’s Day\, or Baekjung (Kor. 백중\, Chin. 百中\, the fifteenth of the seventh lunar month)\, and constitutes one of the important events of the day in order to console the souls of the dead. At White Lotus Haven Zen of Connecticut we hold this ceremony in the month of October. \nParticipants are invited to offer the names of their departed to be displayed and recited in the liturgy. If you would like your dearly departed to be acknowledged in the service please email info@wlhz.org for more information and instruction\, or include the names of your departed with your registration in the “message” section of the contact form. A symbolic name plate burning rite\, to eliminate unwholesome karmic conditions\, will also be performed. A socially-distanced outdoor reception will be held after the service. \nThis year we will hold the event at Trinita Retreat Center in New Hartford\, CT. SUMMARY:Daily Morning Kido (Chanting Liturgy)
DESCRIPTION:Kido literally means “The Way of Energy.” And so\, the daily Kido chanting liturgy is an intentional form of meditative practice using the body — breath\, sound\, and vibration — as a means of self-surrender and opening of mind-heart in humility. \nThe chant forms used derive from Buddhist Mahayana tradition sutras and are transliterated into Korean. We use both short and longer forms of practice as determined by the Abbot\, specific occasions\, or time of season. \nKido is held each day from 7-8am except Wednesdays. All are welcomed. Thus\, to perceive our true nature is to perceive universal substance. With regular chanting\, our sense of being centered gets stronger and stronger. DESCRIPTION:Join the WLHZ Sangha as we conduct a Profession of Vows Service for Sister Yeon An. Sister\, who currently serves as a Haengja will be professing Ten Precepts as a Sami Sunim. The Sangha is overjoyed to celebrate this wonderful occasion. The service begins at 10:00am\, and includes a reception at 12:00pm. Located at the Historic Axe Factory building in Collinsville\, Connecticut. \nSister Yeon An (Lotus of Ardency) 연안행자 Sister Yeon An began her Buddhist practice in the early 1990’s. She professed Three Refuge and Five Precepts Vows within the White Lotus Haven Zen of Connecticut sangha in 2019\, and Haengja vows in 2021. Sister Yeon An serves as a Dharma Mentor/Teacher within the Buddhist Association of the United States (BAUS) Prisoner Correspondence Course. Gentle strength\, resiliency\, and kindness are the fruits of her practice life\, which she selflessly shares with others.
