Kido literally means “The Way of Energy.” And so, the daily Kido chanting liturgy is an intentional form of meditative practice using the body — breath, sound, and vibration — as a means of self-surrender and opening of mind-heart in gratitude. To chant the daily Kido is to give oneself to the present moment, again and again — becoming one with Original Mind — clear like space.
The mantras found in the forms originate from ancient Sanskrit and have been transliterated into a variety of languages, including Korean, which is chanted here. Kido services contain mantras emphasizing humility, repentance and renewal, and devotion. In addition, aspirations for healing and wellbeing are made for those suffering in mind and body, and for the peaceful transition of the deceased. We dedicate the merit (energy of presence) to all sentient beings. The Kido chanting service is an essential daily offering within the monastic practice and lay members and guests are always welcomed to participate.

Chanting meditation means keeping a not-moving mind and perceiving the sound of your own voice. Perceiving your voice means perceiving your true self or true nature. Then you and the sound are never separate, which means that you and the whole universe are never separate. Thus, to perceive our true nature is to perceive universal substance. With regular chanting, our sense of being centered gets stronger and stronger. When we are strongly centered, we can control our feelings, and thus our condition and situation. — Zen Master Seung Sahn
