BUDDHA DAY CELEBRATION – 부처님오신날 Bucheonim Oshinal
May 15, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
In Korean Buddhist tradition this annual ceremony is called “Buddha Day”, or literally, “The Day the Buddha Came” (부처님오신날 Bucheonim Oshinal). At WLHZ we celebrate this occasion along with two other key events in the Teacher’s life — his Enlightenment, and Parinirvana. This collective celebration is also know as Vesak. Observed by Buddhists throughout the world, Buddha Day is the most joyous festival of the year.
The main altar is arranged elaborately with offerings of fruit, flowers, tea, rice and special foods. As is customary, chanting liturgies (Kido) are performed to invite, honor and make offerings to the Great teacher Shakyamuni Buddha. The Story of the Buddha in four scenes is read, and the Bathing of the Baby Buddha ritual is performed. In this ritual, water or sweet tea is ladled over the Baby Buddha statue three times to commemorate the Teacher’s birth, and as a way of renewing one’s own practice commitment to extinguish greed, anger, delusion, and unwholesome karma.
